Two Foundations: One Will Stand
Have you ever watched a beautiful house slowly crumble because it was built on a weak foundation? At first it may look strong; solid walls with everything in place. But beneath it all, the ground is shifting. Cracks begin to form, and doors no longer close the way they should. Over time, the entire structure weakens until it finally collapses. That building was doomed from the beginning.
In Matthew 7, Jesus uses this exact picture to teach us that we are given this same choice. We can build our spiritual house on sand, or we can build it on rock.
Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
Don’t just skim over what Christ said here. It’s not enough to simply hear His Word, we also have to live it (James 1:22). When we obey and apply His teachings, our house (our lives, faith, and relationship with Father), stands firm on the Rock. Psalm 62:2 and 6 declare, He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
We will face many storms in life (hardships, doubts, temptations, and trials), but when our foundation is built on the Rock, we won’t collapse. God is right there with us, our shelter in the storm. He promises I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. (Isaiah 41:10).
And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
God gives us free will. We can hear His Word and walk away, choosing instead to build on sand: The ever-changing lies of the world, the false traditions of man, or temporary things that promise security but never deliver. It might seem okay for a while, but
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
…When the storms hit (and they will), when Satan comes roaring like a lion seeking to devour with his lies and temptations (1 Peter 5:8), our house cannot stand. And the fall is great.
Proverbs 10:25 teaches us this same truth: As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.
God warns us throughout scripture to make sure our spiritual house is built on His truth, not false doctrine or worldly views (Colossians 2:8).
Who Built the Foundation
So, who laid this unshakable foundation that we are to build on? God Himself, through Jesus Christ. Nobody else can lay a different one. Paul makes it clear:
For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Jesus is Emmanuel, God with us (Matthew 1:23). He is eternal and unchanging. When we build our lives on Him, we stand on solid ground. No trial will shake us and we won’t fall. That doesn’t mean we’ll never stumble or make mistakes. It means that God will pick us up when we do. He is always faithful to forgive us when we ask.
Standing Firm in Deception
This truth becomes even more important during the tribulation of the Antichrist, a time of great deception. Scripture instructs us to endure until the end, which means until Christ returns (Matthew 24:13). Without the solid truth of God’s Word as our foundation, standing firm against such deception will be impossible.
Right now, whether we realize it or not, we’re all building on something. Take a moment, my friend, and ask yourself: What am I building my life on? If your foundation feels shaky, it’s never too late to rebuild on the Rock. Our Heavenly Father is so patient, so forgiving, and He loves you with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3).
He is the One who stands at the door and knocks, inviting you to open so He can come in and fellowship with you (Revelation 3:20). He’s ready to help you rebuild on a foundation that will stand for eternity. All you have to do is ask.
When our house is built on Him, no storm can bring it down because the foundation of God standeth sure (2 Timothy 2:19).
A Quiet Moment with God
Heavenly Father, is there an area of my life where I have been trying to patch cracks on a shaky foundation, instead of letting You help me rebuild on Christ the solid Rock?
