God’s Daily Promise: God Gives Wisdom (Day 5)

James 1:5
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

A small note here: in the KJV, the word men is italicized, meaning it was added by the translators and does not appear in the original Greek text. The verse simply says God gives to all. So if you have ever felt left out by that wording, this promise is for you too.

How many times have you found yourself at a crossroads in life, not knowing which direction to go? I have made some decisions in my life that made complete sense to me at the time, only to find out later they were completely wrong. I prayed, thought it through, and then moved forward with confidence…and still went the wrong way. Maybe you know that feeling.

Many times, when we are in need of direction, we feel uncertain, anxious, and overwhelmed. We get that urge to just do something even when we have no idea what the right something is.

What I have learned the hard way is that those moments are not the time to try to figure things out faster. They’re the time to slow down and wait.

Condition/Action

James 1:5 tells us exactly what to do when we lack wisdom: ask God. He wants us to come to Him honestly and humbly, admitting our need and trusting Him to help us.

But the very next verse adds an important part of that condition:

James 1:6
But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

In other words, when we ask for wisdom, we are called to trust that God hears us and will answer. And don’t let the word wavering trip you up. It does not mean you never feel nervous or uncertain. It simply means you do not let doubt take the steering wheel. Faith says, “Lord, I don’t know what to do. But I believe You do, and I believe You will guide me.” When we ask with that kind of trust, we are not being tossed around by fear and overthinking.

This truth is beautifully echoed in Proverbs 3:5–6: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Encouragement

One of the most comforting parts of James 1:5 is this: God gives wisdom liberally, and He upbraideth not.

That phrase upbraideth not means He is not going to scold you. He does not roll His eyes and remind you of every time you went your own way before. He will never mock you or make you feel small for not knowing what to do. He’s your Heavenly Father, and He wants you to come to Him.

So if you’re feeling stuck right now, bring Him all of your confusion, fear, and pressure to make the right choice. You do not have to carry it alone. You can trust Him to answer in His perfect way and in His perfect timing. He is faithful to lead His children because He loves you and cares about every step you take.

And remember, even if you do go the wrong direction, God will always lead you back onto the right path.

Simple Steps to Ask God for Wisdom

  1. Acknowledge you need direction.
“Lord, I don’t know what to do. I need Your wisdom.”
  2. Ask your Heavenly Father for His help.
Be specific about what you need guidance on.
  3. Ask in faith, knowing He hears you and will answer.
“Father, I believe You will guide me. Help me not to waver.”
  4. Read and study His Word.
Wisdom and direction will never contradict Scripture. Ask Him to confirm your steps through His Word.
  5. Be patient and wait on the Lord.
Don’t rush ahead of God’s answer. He often guides us one step at a time.

What does that guidance look like? There are many ways Father leads us. He may guide you through His Word, through prayer, through wise counsel, or by closing a door you were about to walk through and opening a different door instead.

So today, pause right where you are. You don’t have to know the whole path ahead. Just bring every question, every fear, and every decision to the Father who gives wisdom generously. He already knows the way, and He’s already walking it with you.
